July 2021

“Housing is the key driver to almost every economy.”

Welcome and greetings to all of our members, friends, and supporters of the July issue of the Official California Apartment Journal. I am truly grateful to serve as the President of this great association as we continue to move through these unprecedented times. Our Association is and will continue to be leaders and participants in legislation and related issues that will forever affect the way we as rental property owners conduct and operate our rental properties. There is no doubt in my mind that we are all very concerned as we face huge reductions in our income from our rental property while still making investments in these properties to protect not only our investments but to protect the integrity of these properties that we have worked so hard to maintain just like the owners of any other business.

One of the biggest issues we are dealing with is the uncertainty of the government’s actions. There has been legislation that was voted on by the people, yet the government ignored the will of the people and continued with legislation advice to the housing industry. There have been dates that we relied on which were substantially changed that adversely affected us. We are unclear as to what will or will not happen on June 30, 2021. These constant changes make it impossible for us to determine how to best plan and operate our business.

I would like to take this opportunity to update you on some of the innovative steps the Association has taken to expand our efforts to continue to provide you, our members, first-class service. With the addition of John Edmond to our team, he brings years of experience in working with the Long Beach City Council and Mayor’s office on a variety of issues affecting our industry. His tenor in serving as chief of staff for one of the past City Council members equips him with the knowledge of the inner workings of the legislative process, which will be very helpful to us. Mr. Edmond has been instrumental in many of the local City Council races, and he will be providing us directions about the open City Council seats that will be coming up.

As we have discussed many times, it is all about the messaging as we develop relationships with other community organizations with whom we can work together who understand the important role we as rental property owners provide to the City of Long Beach. Housing is the key driver to almost every economy. When you think of the number of small and large businesses and their employees and support staff not to mention the small individuals we employ, that number becomes significant. We are aware and you are aware there are others trying to come into our community where they have no connection offering services that they will be unable to provide. We are and have been, the official voices of the rental housing industry serving Long Beach and surrounding areas for what will soon be 100 years. There is no association that can provide the level of service that we provide. We provide all the latest and best forms, educational seminars, and we have one of the leading lobbyists in Sacramento, Ron Kingston, who provides us with weekly updates and presents us the information we need to contact our elected officials through RED Alerts.

I look forward to seeing you at all upcoming events including our world class trade show. Please feel free to personally reach out to me with any questions or suggestions as to how we can better serve you.
