2024 City of Los Angeles Rent Increases

As of the current moment, the Los Angeles Housing Department has officially announced the next permissible rent increase for the year 2024, following a more than three-year rent freeze attributed to the COVID-19 Renter Protections. This announcement was made on July 1, 2023.

Outlined below are the particulars regarding rent increases governed by the Los Angeles Rent Stabilization Ordinance (RSO):

Effective February 1, 2024, landlords overseeing properties under the purview of RSO are permitted to enact allowable rent increases. It's important to note that no retroactive or banking of rent increases from the past is permissible.

For the period spanning from February 1, 2024, through June 30, 2024, the annual allowable rent increase under RSO stands at 4%, unless modified by the City Council. Additionally, landlords may impose an extra 1% increase for gas and another 1% for electric service, provided they offer these services to their tenants.

Landlords are obliged to furnish tenants with a written notice, delivered at least 30 days in advance, for all rent increases that are below the threshold of 10%.

This crucial information can be accessed in the most recent update of the LA Renter Protections Notice, last revised in July 2023. For direct access to this notice, please follow this link.
